If you're planning to paint your stair treads, the best paint to use is a specialist floor paint to ensure that the paint will be durable given the traffic and footfall that your stairs endure.
Step 1: Ensure the steps stairs are fully prepped
Before you start painting, make sure to fix any issues and create a smooth, dust-free surface. Fill in any holes or cracks, remove any nails, and sand away any flaking or cracked paint. If you're only painting part of the staircase, use masking tape to protect the areas you don't want to paint.
Step 2: Paint the Stairs
Use a paintbrush for the edges and a 4-inch roller for the rest of the stairs for a nice, smooth finish. Let the paint dry for the recommended time.
Drying Time: 4-6hrs at 20°C. Allow to dry for a minimum of 16hrs at 20°C between coats. Allow to dry for a minimum of 48hrs at 20°C before subjecting to heavy traffic.
Step 3: Apply a Second Coat
After the first coat is dry, apply a second coat and let it dry before using the stairs. The Blackfriars Polyutherane Floor Paint will fully cure in about 5-7 days at 20°C, but other products may have different drying times.
Top Tip: If you're using solvent-based paint, remember to wrap your brushes tightly to keep them from hardening between uses. After you're done, clean your brush and/or roller with a spirit cleaner.
Step 4: Leave to Cure
Full cure is achieved in 5-7 days at 20°C.
